9 More Free Windows Apps9 More Free Windows Apps

Posted August 28th, 2008 in Applications and Windows

A week ago I posted a list of 10 Useful Free Windows Apps and discovered as the week went by that I forgot about a number of other useful free Windows applications that I use. This post looks at another 9 freeware Windows apps, two of which are Firefox plugins.

Over the coming weeks I will post reviews and screenshots in separate posts of several of these apps and link those posts from here.

1. Notepad++

Notepad++ is a free text editor for Windows which is far superior to Windows notepad. There are a number of free text editors for Windows but this is the one I use myself currently. Some of the features are as follows:

  • tabbed interface
  • syntax highlighting and folding for a number of programming languages including C C++ Java C# XML HTML PHP CSS Javascript ASP VB/VBS SQL
  • regular expression search and replace
  • file status auto-detection, i.e. if a file is modified outside of Notepad++ you'll be notified

2. InfraRecorder

InfraRecorder is a free CD/DVD burning solution for Microsoft Windows. It offers a wide range of powerful features; all through an easy to use application interface and Windows Explorer integration. The interface reminds me of the K3B application for KDE/Linux.

3. EasyZip and 4. 7-Zip

EasyZip and 7-Zip are decompression applications for decompressing ZIP, TAR, GZIP, RAR etc files.

5. Firefox No Script Plug-in

No Script is a popular Firefox which lets you disable scripting (Javascript, Flash etc) globally and then allow scripting on a site by site basis. It's also possible to reverse this behaviour i.e. to allow scripting for all sites and block some (this is what I do, so far only blocking scripts on a New Zealand newspaper website which insists on having far to much advertising).

6. Read It Later Firefox Add on

Read It Later is similar to the bookmarking function available already in Mozilla Firefox but is intended as a place to store pages you might want to read once later on when you have time, rather than cluttering up your regular bookmarks with many unecessary entries.

7. Ext2 IFS

Ext2 IFS is a driver for accessing Linux ext2 and ext3 partitions from Windows (NT4.0/2000/XP/2003/Vista are supported) with full read and write access. The easy to use GUI allows you to mount the partition as a drive letter which you can then access from Windows Explorer and other applications.

8. Foxit Reader

Foxit Reader is a small and fast PDF document viewer for Windows which you can use instead of the slow, bloated and very large download that is Adobe's Acrobat Reader.

9. VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It is available for Mac OS/X, Linux, BeOS, FreeBSD and others as well as Windows.
