Installing fonts in Open OfficeInstalling fonts in Open Office

Posted November 30th, 2003 in Applications (Updated March 19th, 2007)

Open Office is an open source office suite based on the Star Office 5.2 source code, containing a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation software all compatible with Microsoft's suite of office applications. It runs on a variety of platforms including Microsoft Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris and Apple's OSX.

Please note: this article was written for OpenOffice 1.x and the screens and/or functionality may not apply to the more current versions of OpenOffice. I will investigate and update with a new post if required.

The Windows system fonts are used when running Open Office on Windows, so all you need to do is install fonts in the usual way. This is not the case on Unix and xwindows, however, where you need to use the Open Office printer administration utility to do so; the X11 fonts directory and KDE fonts installed are not used.

The Open Office printer administration utility is a separate application from Open Office itself. It should be listed as one of the options under the "OpenOffice.org" menu in your window manager; if not, the command to run it is "oopadmin" which will be located somewhere like /usr/bin/oopadmin - try whereis oopadmin or locate oopadmin if you are having trouble locating it.

When you start up the Open Office printer administration utility, you'll see a window similar to the one below.

Open
Office Printer Administration

Click the "Fonts" button to open up the fonts dialog, as shown below. This shows all the fonts that are registered with Open Office.

To add new fonts, click the "Add" button.

Open
Office Adding a New Font

You'll see a list of the fonts in the directory shown in the "Source Directory" box. To change to another directory click the ... button next to the directory name, or change the directory name manually.

Select the fonts you want to register with Open Office and click the "OK" button. If you want to install all of them, click the "Select All" button then the "OK" button. This will then register the fonts and you can close the dialog window.

Both TTF and Type 1 fonts can be used by Open Office. The list in the dialog will be filtered to show only these files.
