Fabco Ltd Website using SilverStripeFabco Ltd Website using SilverStripe

Posted February 14th, 2010 in Case Studies and SilverStripe

I put my first SilverStripe website online a couple of nights ago; it's my parents' three page website (Fabco Ltd) with an introduction to their patchwork fabric website, contact details and a list of suppliers.

Converted to SilverStripe

Although SilverStripe is somewhat of an overkill for a three page website, it was already running on a CMS that I created myself and is also being used in another site (which I also intend to convert to SilverStripe) and framework of which is used in the healthy.co.nz website - I have no intentions of moving the healthy.co.nz website to SilverStripe though.

It used to have a news section and my parents were going to maintain it themselves, but felt that it was going to be too complicated to add new news etc so we pulled that section about a month ago. They'll probably still feel the same about the SilverStripe admin (which is easy to use - it's just them, nothing to do with SilverStripe) but I feel it will be easier for all of us to deal with.

To set up SilverStripe, copy their template and content over, do some testing etc and replace the existing online version took less than an hour. It would have taken less time if I hadn't run into a minor hiccup but it now seems to be running all fine and dandy.

The homepage and subpages are slightly different with a larger image on the homepage and smaller ones on the subpages (see the screenshots below). This was achieved with differnet "Home Page" and "Page" page types and templates using the $Layout template variable. I'll detail how this is done in a couple of days in another post.

Screenshots

Here's a screenshot of the homepage. I designed the site myself using a modified version (and some additional Photoshopping) of a DreamTemplate template.

I have another website which I'll convert to SilverStripe later this week and will also report back here when it's done.
