Google to launch Chrome web browser tomorrow
Posted September 2nd, 2008 in Applications
It's all over the Internet today that Google will launch its new web browser called "Chrome" tomorrow at www.google.com/chrome (this link won't work until tomorrow).
The announcement isn't supposed to be until tomorrow but a 38 page online comic book explaining the features etc has been made available and can be read here at Google Books.
The Chrome web browser is based on Apple's WebKit which powers the Safari web browser, which in turn is based on the KHTML rendering engine used in the KDE web browser Konqueror, a favourite of mine.
Chrome has its own built-from-scratch Javascript engine called V8 and runs each tab in a separate process which means a crashing tab doesn't bring down the whole browser. This will require more system requirements initially but apparantly over time as tabs are opened and closed etc it should lead to a more stable browser requiring less overall than other tabbed browsers.
Another feature is their "incongnito" window which doesn't record anything you do while in that window. There's a similar feature coming in Internet Explorer 8 which has been dubbed "porn mode".

I'll be interested to give this a try tomorrow when it is released. Expect the blogosphere and technical news websites to explode with reviews, screenshots etc over the next 24 to 48 hours.
