Links roundup November 18th 2008Links roundup November 18th 2008

Posted November 18th, 2008 in Weekly Roundup

Normally all my weekly offsite links are included in my weekly roundup, but I ran out of time to include them all in yesterday's weekly roundup. There were also too many to put into the one post so it made sense to spread them over a couple of days. The rest of them are listed in this post and also include some from yesterday.

Chrome

Gregg Keizer Framingham at Computer World posted about Google patching a Chrome file-stealing bug. At the time of writing the bug-fix was only in the dev channel and not in the general public version of Chrome. It is possible to switch to the development channel to get the update now.

Harry McCracken at Technologizer posted some answers to Google Chrome questions after spending some time at Google and visiting several teams. Questions covered are: what are the plans for the future; about Chrome sending every keystroke back to Google; whether there will be a Google toolbar for Chrome; and if Chrome will be customizable with extensions like Firefox.

HTML

Mike Hopley at The Web Squeeze posted about choosing the best doctype for your website, first explaining what a doctype is, listing the HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.x doctypes and finally help in deciding which doctype to use.

Dzine Blog posted screenshots of 36 cool custom 404 error pages along with links through to an instance each website's 404 page. I guess those websites will end up with a few extra 404s in their weblogs from being linked from this page... :)

jQuery

Rick Strahl posted that Microsoft updated their intellisense for jQuery. This automatically provides intellisense support in Javascript documents for jQuery functions.

jMaps is a jQuery plugin that provides a really easy API to create and manage multiple google maps on any page and is hosted over at Google Code.

ProDevTips posted a jQuery UI draggable and resizable combination showing a walkthrough of the code and an online example.

Marc Grabanski wrote 5 Tips for Better jQuery Code: using the data() method instead of storing data in the DOM; using jQuery's built-in custom selectors; use the livequery plug-in to manipulate the DOM; use the form plug-in to submit files via Ajax; and use classes as flags.

jQuery Corners is a jQuery plug-in for making rounded corners on divs.

MooTools

David Walsh posted how to track Ajax link clicks with MooTools and Google Analytics. This is really useful because an Ajax request to load content into a page wouldn't normally trigger a new page refresh and the pageview wouldn't be tracked. This solves the issue if you are using the MooTools library. Making this work in other Javascript frameworks will be similar.

Photography

Vailancio Rodrigues at Smashing Magazine posted 50 Examples Of Tilt-Shift Photography, which is where the camera is manipulated so a real life location looks like a miniature-scale model. These photos are amazing because they don't look real but are.

PHP

ProDevTips looked at how to export data from an Excel file to CSV with PHP using the PHP-ExcelReader tool. PHP-ExcelReader is published under the LGPL license (GNU Lesser General Public License).

SilverStripe

SilverStripe v2.3.0 release candidate 1 is now available.

Ubuntu

Ars Technica and Linux Devices reported that Ubuntu will create an ARM port to target netbooks and mobile computing. The new ARM port is expected to be made available in conjunction with the official launch of Ubuntu 9.04 in April 2009.

WordPress

WpRecipes.com looked at how to insert ads into your WordPress RSS feed.

Other Stuff

Tanya Vlach posted a call for engineers to build an intraocular installation of an eye-cam. In plain-English she wants to replace her prosthetic eye with a web-cam style camera to video her life.
