Sri Chinmoy Auckland Domain Half Marathon 2008/2
Posted June 30th, 2008 in Running
I ran the Sri Chinomy Half Marathon in the Auckland Domain on Sunday morning (29th of June 2008), being the second of these for 2008. This post looks at the event and my preparation so I have a record for future reference. This is off-topic from the rest of this blog so for my regular readers expecting LAMP related posts... there was my weekly round up earlier on today with interesting offsite links, my monthly roundup tomorrow and then a regular LAMP etc post on Wednesday (which is about renaming a table in MySQL).
Training and Expectations
The last event I ran was the Christchurch Marathon four weeks before this one on June 1st 2008. I'd only run 8 times in training inbetween events (all fairly short) and have been suffering from a fairly bad cold in the last week or two, so I wasn't really expecting too much from this half marathon. Going into it I would have been happy to do under 1:40.
The Result - 1:37:52
It all came together nicely during the event and I managed to finish in 1:37:52, which is my second best result ever, second only to the personal best I set at the last Sri Chinmoy 5 weeks ago. I'm really pleased with this result and it means both half marathons this year have been under my PB from before this year.
Preparation
The usual 5:50am get up. My sleep had been pretty bad because our 3.5 year old decided to wake up at 3am for about an hour so I was pretty tired getting up. Usual breakfast of porridge, this time mixed with raisins. Usual warm up run, pit stop and stretch before the race. And I ran probably the last 7 or 8 kms with another guy which helped with keeping the pace up.
Water vs Replacment Fluid
I drank just water through the race because I've been finding the replacement drinks supplied a bit hard on my stomach, and had water on every lap except after the first short 1km lap (the Sri Chinmoy is a short 1km lap followed by 8 x 2.5km laps) when I didn't have anything and the last lap when I skipped it. One the second to last lap the guy holding cups only had replace so I had that... in the last lap I could feel it repeating on me so I need to make sure I stick to just the water next time.
Splits
My kilometer splits are as follows. I had a reasonably consistant pace through the race.

Next events
I'm running the 3rd Sri Chinmoy in another 4 weeks. I am considering also running the King of the Mountain in a week and/or the Run Auckland Half Marathon but am not sure yet. They'll be decide-the-day-before type of events and enter on the day.
