Safari / OS X Proxy IssuesSafari / OS X Proxy Issues

Posted September 10th, 2008 in Applications

I am currently using a Mac for testing Safari and the office it is at is behind a proxy which requires a username and password to access. I set up the proxy details, and the user name and password and kept getting the error "HTTP 407 Proxy Authentication Required...". This post looks at other error messages and what I did to fix the problem.

The full error message was as follows:

HTTP 407 Proxy Authentication Required - The ISA Server requires
authorization to fulfill the request. Access to the Web Proxy
service is denied. (12209) Internet Security and Acceleration Server

Searching the Internet didn't seem to help out at all. The Mac this is running on is a few years old and comes with an not up-to-date version of OS/X 10.4, so I decided that maybe running a software update would solve the problem.

When running the software update I got this error message:

A networking error has occurred: Error NSURLErrorDomain-1005 (-1005).
Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again

The next thing I thought to do was to download a copy of Firefox on another machine and copy it to the Mac using a USB key. I set the proxy settings up on Firefox and was able to access the Internet with Firefox no problems.

Still thinking a system update might solve the problem, I went to the Mac OS X Updates page and downloaded the Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (PPC). After installing the update (which rebooted the machine twice) Safari works and so does the Software Update.

So the solution for me was to update to the latest version of OS X 10.4. Hopefully this should work for you too.
