Interesting articles found offsite

This week's list only includes interesting articles found up until Thursday because I am currently on holiday and left on Thursday night.

FreeBSD / DragonFly BSD

There was a performance comparison between the recently released FreeBSD 7.0 and DragonFly BSD 1.12, comparing scaling MySQL and Filesystem I/O on an 8-core Xeon machine. The FreeBSD 7.0 installation fared considerably better.

Linux

The Wired How To Wiki had an article about how to speed up Linux, including hints such as getting rid of unecessary running processes and swap less often.

OS/X

Rich Mogull @ Tidbits talked about why he doesn't use anti-virus software on his Mac, and there's a discussion at Slashdot about this article.

PHP

The Zend Framework 1.5 was released.

Programming

DevTopics posted 13 tips to comment your code, including comment each level, use paragraph comments, and not to insult the reader's intelligence.

Safari

Safari 3.1 for Mac and Windows was released. According to Apple, it's super fast when compared to Firefox 2 and Opera 9 but PC World NZ remains skeptical. You can download Safari from the Apple website. This is the first full release of Safari for Windows - the previous 3.0 release had only a beta version for Windows.

Windows

Vista SP1 was released. Read about it at PC World NZ, The Register, Ars Technica and the discussions at Slashdot and Digg. You can download it here from the Microsoft website.

PC World Australia had an article about Vista vs XP, comparing them and looking at things such as how long you might be able to expect continued support for Windows XP.
